Buying a Forklift: Capacity, Load Center and Site Fit

Forklift selection depends on the actual load and lift position. A headline capacity does not describe every attachment, height or load-center combination.

Specify the real load and truck configuration

Forklift selection starts with the load's mass, dimensions, stability and center of gravity. Include pallet entry and any attachment. A pallet's outside dimensions may not reveal how an uneven or projecting load is distributed. Ask for the rating that applies to the actual truck, attachment, load center and required lift position, not just headline truck capacity.

Measure pickup and receiving interfaces, including pallet undersides, rack clearances and withdrawal space. A truck with sufficient lifting capability may still be unsuitable for the carrier or destination. Identify loads outside the normal range and keep their handling requirements visible rather than assuming the standard pallet describes every movement.

Review the loaded route and supporting resources

Survey turns, doors, visibility, pedestrian crossings, destination height and surface condition with the load in place. Discuss ventilation and charging or fueling needs for the proposed truck. These facility requirements affect usable deployment and should be resolved before an order is approved.

Compare complete proposals with the same application brief, service scope and selected attachments. OSHA 1910.178 addresses manufacturer approval for modifications affecting capacity and safe operation; spare nominal capacity is not permission to improvise a configuration. Keep the approved rating and configuration identifiable so later substitutions do not undermine the basis of the purchase.

Buyer questions

Does an attachment leave capacity unchanged?

No. Attachments can change truck performance and capacity; obtain the required manufacturer information and updated markings.

What belongs in a forklift RFQ?

Include load dimensions and weight, pallet entry, required lift height, attachments, aisle turns, door clearances and the operating environment.

Can an attachment be added using spare headline capacity?

Do not assume so. Attachments can affect capacity, handling and visibility. Obtain the required manufacturer information and approval for the combination and address applicable markings and training. The base truck's headline figure does not establish the rating for every attachment and load position.

Why include pallet underside dimensions in a forklift RFQ?

They affect entry, engagement and support. Similar external dimensions can hide different openings or load arrangements. Provide the actual carrier and receiving interface so the supplier reviews the complete transfer rather than inferring compatibility from a phrase such as standard pallet.
