Cantilever Ladders: Specify the Reach and the Base Together
A cantilever ladder can place a standing platform over an obstruction while its base remains outside that area. Both the overhang and the support arrangement need review.

Specify overhang and base location as one arrangement
A cantilever ladder reaches over an obstruction, but the supported configuration determines its usable reach and rating. Measure the obstruction's height and depth, the required work point and the floor space where the base can stand. Include machinery legs, traffic and changes caused by doors, guards or moving equipment.
Describe how the user enters and what work is performed at the end of the overhang. Record tools, materials and task duration. A nominal platform dimension does not establish enough room for the operation, and overhang cannot be evaluated independently of the base and support arrangement shown in the proposed design.
Approve the complete geometry rather than extending equipment on site
Request a drawing identifying the platform reach, load, base, access and selected protection. Compare it against the equipment in its service configuration. A longer reach should not be created by extending a deck or changing a counterbalance informally. Changes need the appropriate design and manufacturer review.
If the ladder will serve several machines, list each application and the route between them. Identify shared dimensions and exceptions instead of assuming equal machine heights mean equal fit. Check delivered configuration against the approved scope. Addressing these constraints in the RFQ helps avoid a custom ladder that fits its first station but cannot be used elsewhere as intended.
| Item | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Obstruction | Complete profile and moving envelope. | Determines clearance and usable overhang. |
| Base | Available floor area and adjacent routes. | The support must fit the real setup location. |
| Task | Standing area, tools and component handling. | Reach alone does not establish useful access. |
| Design | Approved overhang, load and support. | Prevents independent or informal extensions. |

Buyer questions
Can we extend an existing ladder's platform?
Only through an approved design change that addresses the complete structure and its rating.
What makes a useful cantilever sketch?
Show the obstruction profile, required standing area, available base space and all dimensions from a common floor reference.
Can a cantilever ladder serve several machines?
Only where each intended task, obstruction and base location fits the approved configuration. Similar height does not establish the same clearance, reach or loading. Document reviewed applications and provide another appropriate method for exceptions rather than modifying the ladder to force fit.
What belongs on a cantilever access drawing?
Show the full base, access, platform, overhang and protection with the obstruction and work point. Identify the actual rating and support assumptions. A deck-only sketch leaves unresolved the relationship between reach, support, user entry and the surrounding operating space.
