Jib Cranes: Specify the Sweep, Reach and Support
A jib crane serves a defined working area around its support. Check the load path and installation before choosing boom length or nominal capacity.

Specify actual hook positions within the working sweep
A jib crane must cover the required pickup and placement positions, not simply have a long boom. Plot the useful sweep and show obstructions, load dimensions and the intended approach. Include the hoist and lifting accessory when calculating available headroom. Structural height and boom length do not establish every usable hook position.
Provide verified load information and the actual work cycle. Record whether the load needs to pass around machinery or be presented at several stations. A longer jib can add an installation or clearance constraint without improving the required transfer. Compare the proposed design with the measured work area rather than selecting reach in isolation.
Resolve the support and installation responsibilities
Ask for foundation or structural requirements, rotation limits, controls and relevant service access. Do not assume an existing floor or substantial-looking column can support the proposed crane. Identify who verifies that interface and what site work is included or excluded from the quotation.
Use the same load, hook positions and installed scope for competing proposals. Include inspection, parts and maintenance arrangements in the ownership review. Resolving support and clearance before ordering helps prevent a crane arriving with sufficient nominal capacity but an unresolved building connection or insufficient lifting room at the workstation.
| Input | Record | Confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Pickup, placement and obstructions. | Usable hook positions and sweep limits. |
| Headroom | Load, hoist and accessory dimensions. | Enough clearance for the whole operation. |
| Support | Proposed floor or structural connection. | Required design and site verification. |
| Scope | Controls, installation and maintenance access. | Included work and acceptance responsibilities. |

Buyer questions
Does a longer jib automatically improve usefulness?
It may increase coverage but can change support requirements and introduce obstructions; compare the approved design as a whole.
Can a jib be attached to any substantial-looking column?
No. The support and connections need an appropriate review for the actual design and loading. Provide the proposed location and structural information and assign verification responsibility. Appearance or the presence of other equipment does not establish that the column is suitable for the crane.
Why include the lifting accessory when specifying hook height?
It occupies space and affects engagement and release. A crane can have adequate structural clearance while the complete hoist, accessory and load cannot perform the transfer. Describe the whole lifting arrangement so the proposed hook coverage and headroom can be checked against actual requirements.
