Custom Industrial Stairs: Review Geometry and Installation

Industrial stairs should be specified as a complete access route. The stair, landing, rails and supporting structure need to work together for the intended use.

Specify the route between levels, not only the elevation

Custom industrial stairs should be reviewed as a complete access route. Record finished floor and landing levels, available run and width, headroom, approaches and intended users. Include tools and materials carried and distinguish routine circulation from occasional maintenance access. A ladder arrangement should not be assumed suitable for conversion into stairs by changing tread dimensions alone.

Show doors, adjacent openings, nearby equipment, landings and rails in the site drawing. A stair flight can fit the vertical distance while conflicting with a door or another work area at its landing. Keep the required arrival and departure space in the design review.

Define structural and installation responsibility

Ask who confirms applicable requirements, support, anchors and existing building interfaces. A shop drawing does not by itself verify that the site connection is adequate. Custom fabrication still requires an appropriate installation-specific design and review; it is not evidence of compliance independent of the actual use and location.

Compare equipment supply, site preparation, installation and acceptance against the same scope. Identify dimensions requiring verification before fabrication and control later revisions. Clear route and interface requirements reduce the risk of a finished stair assembly needing modification because the landing, support or surrounding operation was omitted from the purchasing brief.

Buyer questions

Can a ladder drawing be adapted into stairs by changing tread dimensions?

Do not assume the access types or requirements are interchangeable. Review intended use, geometry, landings, protection and support as a complete design. A space-saving alteration should go through an appropriate approval process rather than an informal conversion of an existing sketch.

Does a shop drawing establish the building connection is adequate?

Only where that responsibility and review are explicitly included. Clarify structural interfaces, anchors and site verification with the responsible parties. An equipment drawing can show the assembly without approving every building or floor condition to which it will be attached.
