Ladder Safety Rules: Selection, Inspection and Placement
Useful ladder rules connect the equipment to the task. A ladder in good condition can still be inappropriate for the work or location.

Connect selection and inspection with the task
Ladder rules should begin with equipment identity, intended use, rating and condition. Use the actual instructions and applicable requirements rather than assuming short ladders or brief jobs need less review. Check the supporting surface and surrounding work as well as the ladder itself. Sound equipment can still be inappropriate for the task or location.
Describe reach, standing position, tools and carried goods. If the job requires overreaching, an obstructive load or an unapproved standing position, reconsider the setup or equipment. The load rating does not establish a workable transfer for every item. Training should address the actual ladder types and tasks used at the site.
Make defect reporting and suitable alternatives available
Define how users identify and report defects and prevent unsuitable equipment from being used until addressed. Record enough information to identify the ladder and problem. Keep the relevant inspection and service process accessible to supervisors instead of relying on informal verbal warnings that may not reach the next user.
Provide an appropriate alternative while equipment is unavailable. Review recurring problems with retrieval, positioning and storage as well as worker instruction. Clear rules are most effective when the facility can supply a suitable access method, reducing pressure to repeat an unsuitable setup simply because the usual ladder is missing or defective.
Review checklist
- Correct task and ladder
- Inspection and removal process
- Placement and access clearance
Buyer questions
Are short ladders exempt from safe-use requirements?
No. Low working height does not remove the need for appropriate equipment, placement and use.
What if a ladder looks sound but its rating is unknown?
Resolve identity and rating before assigning the task; appearance alone does not establish approved capacity or use.
How should carried goods influence ladder selection?
Describe weight, size, visibility and the transfer route, not only the working height. A ladder can reach the location while leaving carrying or handling unsuitable. Review representative items and an appropriate alternative method when needed instead of relying on rating alone or expecting users to improvise.
Why should defect reporting include access to an alternative ladder?
Removing unsuitable equipment can leave the task unresolved. The site should have a workable route to obtain appropriate access while the defect is assessed. Otherwise workers may select an improvised method. Keep reporting, replacement availability and the approved repair or return process connected.
