Upright Aluminum Scaffold Towers: Check Configuration and Site

A scaffold tower's usable height and stability depend on its approved assembly. Aluminum construction does not remove the need for proper support and inspection.

Identify the approved tower system and configuration

An Upright aluminum scaffold tower should be reviewed using the actual system identity and assembly information. Aluminum construction does not establish capacity or interchangeability with similar components. Confirm the frames, braces, decks, access and stabilizing parts approved for the proposed arrangement rather than treating loose pieces as a complete specification.

State working levels, loads and access needs. Review the supporting surface, overhead hazards and nearby traffic for each location. A tower may be practical to move while still requiring a different assessment at its next position. Ease of movement does not establish suitability for any surface or incline.

Control assembly, movement and changes

Keep the manufacturer's instructions and required competent oversight available through the applicable process. Follow the actual procedures for movement and occupation rather than improvising from a product description. Do not mix matching-looking parts or extend the arrangement without the appropriate system review.

For procurement, request a complete component and configuration scope with relevant instructions and acceptance information. Identify site-preparation and inspection responsibilities. Retain the approved arrangement for later changes so the facility is not left with an available set of parts but no appropriate working configuration for the maintenance task.

Review checklist

  • Approved assembly
  • Surface and surrounding hazards
  • Access and inspection responsibility

Buyer questions

What should be available at the worksite?

Keep the approved configuration, assembly instructions and inspection responsibilities accessible to the people erecting and using the tower.

Can a scaffold tower move with people aboard?

Do not assume so. Follow the actual system instructions and applicable requirements for the exact movement and setup. A mobile design is not general permission for occupied travel. Review the route, load, support and required procedures through the responsible site process.

Can matching-looking components be used to extend a tower?

Only where compatibility and the resulting arrangement are approved for the system and intended use. Similar dimensions do not establish structural or operational equivalence. Identify components and obtain relevant instructions and review rather than treating available parts as an approved extension.
