Yard Ramp Applications: Match the Ramp to the Loading Route

A yard ramp creates an inclined transfer route, so the handling vehicle and load must be considered together. Ramp material is only one part of the selection.

Specify the ramp as part of the loaded vehicle movement

A yard ramp connects a handling vehicle with a loading surface, so cargo weight alone is not the application load. Provide the handling vehicle, attachments and load information needed for the supplier's rating review. Record ground and trailer heights, available approach space and the transition at each end. The crest can constrain vehicle clearance even when the main ramp incline appears suitable.

Include the route used to enter, align and leave the ramp. Describe surface condition, drainage, traffic frequency and environmental exposure. Ask how the actual ramp is positioned, supported and secured for that operation. Do not assume a lighter ramp can be moved manually or that any forklift below a headline capacity is compatible.

Resolve setup and vehicle restraint before comparing materials

Request operating-range information, usable width, relevant transition details and the approved support and restraint arrangements. Where dockboard requirements apply, OSHA 1910.26 addresses secure positioning and preventing transport-vehicle movement. The proposed ramp and loading procedure still need review for the actual vehicle, site and transfer.

Compare aluminum and steel options only after establishing equivalent task requirements. Include repositioning method, inspection access, wear surfaces and maintenance in the review. A complete RFQ reduces the risk of a ramp arriving with an unsuitable transition or movement arrangement, leaving the loading operation dependent on an unplanned alternative.

Vehicle and loadCombined operating arrangement and relevant dimensions.Capacity must apply to the actual transfer.
Height and transitionGround, receiving heights and approach geometry.Clearance can limit use independently of rating.
Support and restraintSurface, positioning and approved securing method. The ramp needs a suitable complete setup.
EnvironmentExposure, traffic and maintenance resources.Material and surface choices need application context.

  • Vehicle and load combination
  • Required operating height
  • Approach and transition space

Buyer questions

Can a ramp's capacity be compared with cargo weight alone?

No. Include the handling vehicle, attachments and load under the manufacturer's rating method.

Why is the transition important?

Vehicle clearance and load behavior at a change of slope can limit suitability even when the main ramp dimensions appear adequate.

Can we use a yard ramp with any forklift below its capacity?

No. Review the vehicle, attachments, load, geometry and approved operating conditions together. A nominal rating does not establish transition clearance, traction or a suitable setup. Obtain confirmation for the intended combination and follow the equipment-specific instructions and site procedure.

What makes ramp quotations difficult to compare?

Different operating heights, ratings, surfaces, positioning arrangements and exclusions can make similar-looking ramps materially different. Use one task brief and request the actual model data, included components and assumptions. Compare the complete operating arrangement rather than only overall dimensions and quoted amount.
