Reversible Boom Cranes: Review Reach, Capacity and Support

A reversible boom crane should be selected using its approved configurations and load chart. The name does not establish where it can lift a particular load.

Map pickup, movement and placement at the required reach

A reversible boom crane must be assessed as the actual proposed lifting configuration. Identify the load's verified mass, dimensions, center of gravity and lifting arrangement. Plot pickup and placement points with nearby equipment and the space available for the base. Include the hoist or lifting accessory when checking usable clearance.

Request the rating information for the boom positions and support arrangement needed by the task. Maximum capacity should not be assumed available at maximum reach or in every configuration. Where a drawing or chart is unclear, resolve the question with the supplier rather than selecting a favorable figure from another model.

Compare setup responsibilities and complete lifting scope

Ask the proposal to identify the base, supports, controls, required accessories and installation or positioning requirements. Show how the load reaches the pickup point and leaves after placement. A crane can have adequate lifting capability while the surrounding process lacks room to present or withdraw the goods.

Use the same load cycle and site conditions for each quotation. Include inspection access, parts information and the facility resources needed to operate the equipment. Keep later load changes subject to another review. Defining the complete task before purchasing helps avoid a crane that matches a headline rating but cannot perform the required movement.

Review checklist

  • Load weight and center of gravity
  • Required reach and lift height
  • Base and support conditions

Buyer questions

What if the load weight is unknown?

Verify it through an appropriate source before selecting or planning the lift; an unverified estimate should not become an assumed rating input.

Can maximum crane capacity be used at every boom position?

Use the applicable manufacturer information for the specific position and configuration. Do not combine independent maximums or infer rating from appearance. Provide the load and required movement and resolve unclear chart information through the appropriate review before selecting or planning the lift.

What if the handled load changes after purchase?

Review weight, geometry, center of gravity, lifting points and movement against the approved arrangement. Even a lighter load can present different positioning or support needs. Keep changed applications subject to review rather than assuming the original selection covers every future operation.
