Work Platforms: Safe Use Begins with the Approved Configuration

A work platform should be used within its intended configuration, load and environment. Review the equipment instructions alongside the actual task.

Use the platform within its reviewed task and configuration

A work platform should be assigned using the actual model, intended use, rating and configuration. Review deck, access, rails, supports and movement restraints where applicable. Include the task, tools, materials and working position. Age or appearance alone does not determine suitability, and a sound platform may still be inappropriate for a changed operation.

Check the supporting surface, access route and clearances around equipment in its service state. An open panel or larger component can alter the required interface without changing service height. Reassess fit rather than assuming that a previous use covers every later maintenance task at the same location.

Control changes instead of extending use informally

Do not remove protection, extend a deck or alter supports simply to reach a new work point. Obtain the appropriate review and approval for changes affecting the arrangement. If the task cannot be performed within the supported configuration, select another suitable method rather than treating equipment availability as authorization.

Keep equipment identity, instructions, inspection status and approved task coverage available to users. For purchasing or replacement, specify the actual interfaces and expected movement and service needs. This helps maintain reliable access while preventing a platform selected for one operation from accumulating unreviewed applications over time.

  • Approved configuration and load
  • Equipment and site inspection
  • Training and defect reporting

Buyer questions

Can a platform be modified to reach a new service point?

Only through an appropriate approved design and use review. Informal alterations to deck, supports, protection or mobility can change structural and operating assumptions. Describe the new task and ask for a suitable configuration or alternative rather than extending the existing equipment by convenience.

Does platform age alone determine suitability?

No. Condition, identity, documentation, approved configuration and actual task fit all need review. An older unit is not automatically unsuitable, and a new unit is not automatically appropriate everywhere. Use the relevant inspection, service and application processes for the equipment and work being assigned.
