A useful pre-use review checks the operator, machine and work area together. Complete the manufacturer-specific inspection before starting elevated work.

Make lift readiness visible to supervisors
  1. Identify the assignment

    Confirm model, operator and task.

  2. Inspect equipment

    Resolve defects appropriately.

  3. Assess the site

Review the current envelope and activity.

  4. Prepare support

    Confirm communication and response.

Confirm readiness for the actual assignment

A supervisor's lift-readiness review should identify the machine, operator, task and location. Confirm appropriate preparation, access to the instructions and the equipment's inspection status. A short or urgent job is not a reason to approve a defective machine or bypass the site's removal-from-service process.

Describe the platform load, working position and movement needed to complete the job. Include tools, replacement parts and a different handling method if goods cannot be managed within the approved arrangement. Review the actual model's limits rather than assuming the same category name means identical capacity or operation.

Make stop-and-review conditions clear

Check the supporting surface, route, overhead services, traffic and access for the planned support arrangements. Identify changes that require reassessment, such as another trade blocking the route or different tools changing the load. Ground support should understand its assigned role and the relevant model-specific emergency information before work begins.

When a defect or event is reported, retain the machine identity, observed symptoms, location and action taken for service assessment. Do not interpret restored motion as proof that the original issue is resolved. Clear readiness and defect records help keep equipment available through the proper process rather than allowing uncertainty to accumulate between users and maintenance.

Review checklist

  • Model-specific inspection
  • Site hazards and access controls
  • Ground support and communication

Buyer questions

Can a supervisor approve a defective lift for a short job?

Do not bypass the approved defect and return-to-service process because the task is brief.

What information belongs in a lift defect report?

Identify the model, condition or fault, task, location and relevant event through the designated process. Keep equipment out of assumed service until the required assessment and return decision are complete. Clear information helps responsible personnel separate a defect from a task or site mismatch without relying on appearance.

What should ground support understand before work begins?

The people assigned by the plan should know the equipment and work location, communication method and model-specific emergency arrangements relevant to their role. Keep instructions accessible and review changes. General familiarity with lifts should not replace the actual response preparation for this task.
